An Android 2.2 upgrade for the Samsung Vibrant will roll out to subscribers starting on Jan. 21, T-Mobile's chief marketing officer Cole Brodman confirmed to PCMag today.

The upgrade will come in waves, so not all Vibrant owners will receive it on the first day, Brodman said. But everyone should have it within a few weeks.

The Android 2.2 upgrade brings several new features, most notably increased speed. Samsung's delay in updating its flagship phones has been the subject of intense discussion on the Internet over the past week, with many Galaxy S owners expressing anger at Samsung's lack of communication about the delay.

So what was the hold-up? It was purely technical, Brodman said—it wasn't about marketing, payments or sales. Samsung sent its base 2.2 upgrade to T-Mobile in late November, and with the holiday season, it's taken until now for T-Mobile to work out the kinks and integrate its own features.

"It was a quality control and timing issue," Brodman said. "The biggest challenge is integration and customization."

In the future, T-Mobile aims to update all of its phones to new versions of Google's Android OS within 3-5 months after Google makes the OS version public, Brodman said. The delay comes from having to integrate manufacturer skins and T-Mobile's own features, such as Wi-Fi calling.

Smartphone users expecting frequent upgrades is "new to us," Brodman said, "and we're going to have to step up and change the way we do things."

US Cellular said recently on Facebook that the Froyo upgrade for its Samsung Mesmerize would come in "March." Verizon, Sprint and AT&T haven't yet given dates for their own Froyo Galaxy S upgrades.

Brodman added that the new, 4G Galaxy S for T-Mobile would probably debut at Mobile World Congress on February 13.

Hi everyone.

I've just plugged in my cell phone to try to upgrade, but Kies shows me the following message:

Model Name:
Current Version: PDA:JI6 / PHONE:JI6 / CSC:JI6
The device does not support firmware Upgrade

I have upgraded my firmware with Kies mini, so I guess my firmware can be upgraded. What's wrong? Will I be able to upgrade my device?

Thanks,

The update will not be done through Kies. T-Mobile will be pushing it out to the phones over the next couple of weeks. So it may not happen right away but sometime over the next couple of weeks a message will pop up on your phone saying there is an update available for your phone and would you like to download it. When this happens you select yes. It will download the software, install it, and reboot. When the phone turns back on you will be running Froyo.

So come to find out it is now available through Kies. The build number is UVKA6. Try it again and hope it works for you. I would still say that the custom 2.2 roms out there are still better than the official 2.2 release.

Updated my Vibrant using Kies as advertised by T Mobile, and to be honest, I was shocked when it worked perfectly. Skype and wifi calling works well.

Yeah....i got the Froyo updated to my vibrant. here are the pros and cons.

Pros:
Better youtube.
Better GPS.
Auto rotation on status bar.
Better Categories on settings
Auto screen brightless

Cons:
It runs faster than 2.1 but still slower than rooted and lag fixed 2.1.
Deleted the samsung UI
DON"T EVER USE THE PIN LOCK WHEN RESTART UR VIBRANT(b/c u will not be able to start up ur device and it will just keep on trying to turn on but it just can't till maybe u r lucky, it let you boot up.)
Don't know how to root it and stuff at all

I hope these will help you guys to decide get it or not.

Are you sure that when you connected your phone to the computer you have selected the samsung kies option?

Ok, so when you plug in the usb to your phone it should ask you how you want to connect the phone to the computer. When it does select samsung kies and then you should be able to continue with the update.
