I am a very beginning newbie and have been looking at the sections on rooting my Vibrant.  I installed the 2.2 update a couple of weeks ago and am wondering if it is possible to root the phone after the update was installed.  It appears the many people want to root to get the wi-fi tethering, but this works fine on my phone with the 2.2 update.  Any other reasons to root?  I would appreciate any advice and/or guidance.  Thanks for your patience.

One of the main benefits of rooting is the ability to flash custom roms.  There are several roms out there that are so much faster and run better than the stock froyo.  Also you can use  some of the apps from the market that require root like adfree, titanium backup, and root explorer just to name a few. Also you can install a different kernel which can overclock your cpu to make your phone blazing fast.

Thanks for the reply.  Bear with me here...so I am able to root the phone with 2.2 installed?  Also, is there a simplified guide or posts somewhere explaining how to flash roms and install kernals and do all of these things you and others have explained?  How do I know which ones will make the phone faster and run better?

Yes, you can root your phone after installing the 2.2 update. I too have updated to stock 2.2 but didn't like it because it was really laggy and decided to install a custom rom. If you want, you can install the TeamWhiskey custom rom. The people there are very friendly and will be happy to guide you through installing the custom rom. Keep in mind that it will take about an hour but after the update, my phone was sooo much faster and the interface was amazing! You should check it out at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925548.

Also, their IRC is http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=teamwhiskey
Go here and they will tell you step-by-step how to install the custom rom.

I would agree that Team Whiskey puts out some of the best ROMS out there! After flashing one of their ROMS you will never want to use a stock ROM again. lol. Below is a link to their guide on how to flash a custom ROM.

Sooo...now I see from another post that you recommend going back to the stock firmware before rooting and flashing any custom ROMs.  The post indicated that many people were having trouble rooting and flashing ROMs after the update.  If I do this, will I get everything back from the Market that I installed?  Also, with all the ROMS out there that are supposed to speed up the phone, is there a limit to the number of ROMs that I should flash?  I don't want to have an overload.  Thanks again.

Ok have read that a lot of people have had problems getting clockworkmod recovery to work right, after the update. So to avoid those problems going back to stock is a good idea. Whenever I flas a custom ROM I always Odin back to stock first.
